It means someone who covers up the truth.

It is the same word for a farmer, one who covers up the seed with soil. A metaphor.

So to be a Kaffir, someone has to know the truth and then consciously cover it up.

If you do not believe Islam to be true and never did, how can you be a Kaffir?
