Let's Rid Ourselves of Saudi OilReader comment on item: [Saudi Arabia:] Not Friend or Foe Submitted by Steven Litvintchouk (United States), May 15, 2002 at 22:34 Until the United States faces up to its over-dependence on Middle East oil,we will continue to have to suck up to the Saudis and the other dictators in that region, to keep that oil flowing to America. There are other sources of oil available now: Russia, Azerbaijan, etc. We should negotiate deals with these countries for their oil. And we need to conserve fuel for the duration of our war on terror--which means we must stop driving those gas-guzzling monstrosities: huge SUVs and huge pickup trucks. We can do that by imposing a steep tax on gasoline, and a steep "gas-guzzler" tax on gas-guzzling vehicles. During World War II, gasoline was strictly rationed to U.S. consumers. You got about 3 gallons a week. Without the necessary ration coupon, you got zero. So asking Americans to sacrifice yet again to preserve their freedom in the face of this new terrorist threat, isn't asking too much.
