Re: Islamic Sharia Law versus Jewish Law

Reader comment on item: [Beltway Snipers]: Converts to Violence?

Submitted by Charlie (United States), Oct 30, 2002 at 00:38

Although I am not a rabbi, I can think of at least two major differences between the application of Islamic law and Jewish law.

One is that Judaism is emphatically NOT a "fundamentalist" religion, at least in the sense of the way the term is understood in the west. The Torah, the written law, can only be interpreted and applied with reference to the three thousand plus year rabbinic tradition -- and there are many divergent points of view within that tradition.

Another is that full application of Jewish law must await the reestablishment of the Temple in Jerusalem.

One thing that is common to both: Sharia does not apply to non-Muslims, and Jewish law does not apply to non-Jews ...
