Hello Daniel,
I am so throughly dismayed by what is happening in the Middle East. At least the victory of Hamas brings them out into the open. Arafat was the master of lip service to the rest of the world but never had any intention of curtailing the destructive agenda of Hamas. I also lay some of the blame on Abbas. He had a window of opportunity to demonstrate his desire to reform the financial corruption of his predecessor, provide the Palestinians some hope for their future by addressing their disinfranchisement at an economic level and bringing home to them that the secular moderates were their saviors and not just more of the same.. His failure helped to bring about the Hamas victory and has now slammed that window shut. When I heard that the U.S. delivered 2 million dollars to help counter the efforts of Hamas, I thought to myself, too little too late.
The Israelis have always had to police the Palestinians because the Palestinians have never had the will, not the ability, but the will to abanbon their desire for the complete destruction of Israel. The Palestinians have painted themselves into a corner by choosing Hamas as their political voice. As far as I am concerned they are officially a terrorist state and should be treated accordingly. Hopefully the rest of the world will finally see them for what they really are, not the victims of the Israelis but the victims of their own destructive hatred.
Personally, and I say this with my tongue wedged firmly in my cheek, that it is time for some more "Shock and Awe" and just nip all of this madness in the bud, regardless of world opinion! I heard the U.N. in Nov. 2005 exhibited a map which did not include the state of Israel. Perhaps our first bit of "Shock" should be to destroy the U.N. building and then people will be "Awed" by the new NYC tourist maps which do not include the address of the U.N.
Cheers!
Janet
