Pakistan does not have to be complicated

Reader comment on item: Is Radical Islam in Decline?
in response to reader comment: Pakistan is complicated.

Dear Dr Pipes, Your reader Michael S says that Pakistan is complicated and mentions that multiple ethno-linguistic regions make Pakistan complicated. Michael S is right. It becomes difficult to govern a place if there are multiple number of languages and ethnicities in play. But Pakistan does not have to be so complex. If Pakistan adopts genuine secular democracy most of its complexity will evaporate.

Just across Pakistan's eastern border is India. India is much bigger, has many more languages, ethnicities, and religions. It should be more complex than Pakistan. But it is less complex because it is a genuine democracy.

Our world must realize that a lot of misery in the Islamic world is self-imposed. Let me repeat. A lot of misery in the Islamic world is self-imposed. If Islamic societies give up on their self-selected (or God-mandated??) theocracies and adopt genuine secular democracies, half of their problems will instantaneously disappear.
