Salman Rushdie, diamond splitter

Reader comment on item: Is Radical Islam in Decline?
in response to reader comment: Treating Muhammad as a mere mortal

I've thought a lot about your comment, Prashant, and also Dr. Pipes's. One would expect the splitting of the demigod Mohamed from the God, Allah, to be accompanied by a great deal of anger.

To paraphrase Sammy Davis Jr. "Do the name Salman Rushdie ring a bell?"

Maybe the splitting and rehumanizing has already happened and all the attacks against the West since Rushdie and the Mohamed cartoons are an indication that these efforts have hit at a fundamental weakness in Islam: the claim that Christians went astray in taking a man to be God while they themselves have increasingly done likewise.

If true, we'll need a mountain bigger than Rushmore one day to put Rushdie's head on.
