The Bubble of the Elite

Reader comment on item: Why the Paris Massacre Will Have Limited Impact

Submitted by Peter (United States), Nov 14, 2015 at 14:41

You write, "Only a truly massive loss of life, perhaps in the hundreds of thousands, will force the professionals to back off their deeply ingrained pattern of denying an Islamic component in the spate of attacks."

Not necessarily so.

If the muslims were to specifically target the elite and elite institutions instead of everyday people, the elite would soon sober up. Say, the NY Times building was bombed and destroyed or the U.N or the Kennedy Center or how about the Harvard commencement ceremony.

The elite can be in denial when ordinary people are being killed, but when it is they and their family, then these people will sing a different tune damn fast.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I disagree. Every attack so far that hurts the professionals has also been discounted. I think, for example, of the remarkable story of the attack on the Jewish Federation building in Seattle.
