Reader comment on item: Why the Paris Massacre Will Have Limited Impact

Submitted by Jeff (United States), Nov 16, 2015 at 12:31

Sadly, you are right (I wish I could disagree) and the process got started even before the attacks were over. To paraphrase two main things I heard on the news:

"We don't know if the attacks were coordinated." Leaving open the distinct possibility that separate teams of mass murderers, unknown to each other, happened to attack 6 different sites with guns and explosives in the same city at the same time.

"We'll update when we learn something about the motivation of the attackers." As if we didn't know. Only our leaders and our intrepid free press were in the dark on this one.

The President said he didn't want to speculate on who was responsible. At least he hasn't called it workplace violence. Maybe that's progress.

And we didn't have to wait long before the press reported comforting statements from Muslim leaders:

Imam Johari Abdul-Malik of the Muslim Alliance in North America called on Muslims to "redouble our efforts in vigilance and confronting extremism."

Very impressive. Except two times zero is zero.

Who was surprised by the Paris attack? Anyone? Saddened, yes. Incensed, yes. Surprised? No. When the President laughs his way through a golf game after an American citizen has his head sliced off in front of a camera, what's the message to ISIS? Don't worry, be happy, keep murdering, keep expanding. The only question is, who's next? We probably don't have long to wait before we get the answer.
