Don't forget Iran

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Syrian Downing of a Turkish Warplane

Submitted by Lars Nielsen (Denmark), Jun 25, 2012 at 07:53

Mr Pipes has for a long time advocated, that israel should make a preemptive strike on Irans's nuclear facilities. Bur this would be a most dangerous step, which might unite the arabs and iranians against Israel.

Now however, there is a possiblity that Turkey would provoke a war with Iran by attacking Syria. This would benefit Israel and weaken islamism if two such important islamist states started to fight each other.

So obviously, NATO should support Turkey.

The only real problem is, if Russia would involve itself militarily in such a conflict.

Therefore, NATO should only support Turkey materially and economically and only use its military power to keep the Hormuz strait open and eventually bomb iranian nuclear facilities.

Daniel Pipes replies:

You are not taking into account the impact that a victory over Syria would have on the already bellicose AKP leadership in Ankara.
