Turkey afraid of Syra's alies

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Syrian Downing of a Turkish Warplane

Submitted by Henk (Netherlands), Jun 24, 2012 at 09:57

Given the fact that Turkey is far stronger than Syria, there is a remarkable restraint towards Syria, that is not in line with their rhetoric. Given their rhetoric, one would expect the Turkish military intervention to have taken place already. If is is only Turkey against Syria, Turkeys doesn't need help from its Nato alies. It seems that Turkey is afraid for intervention on behalf of Syria from Iran or Russia. Given Erdogan's increasing tendency towards radical Islam, it is in the interest of the West that Erdogan becomes the captive of his own rhetoric.
