Once burned, twice afraid?

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Syrian Downing of a Turkish Warplane

Submitted by Vazir Mukhtar (United Kingdom), Jun 24, 2012 at 21:55

The US has no dog in this fight. We, as do many others, sympathize with the Syrians fighting for the end to Mr Assad's regime and certainly sympathize with those non-combatants who have lost loved ones. But with Russia and China as members of the UN Security Council blocking anything more than mild statements about the happenings in Syria, the US and its NATO allies should leave this business to the Syrians and Turks to sort out.

When the Security Council decides to intervene in Syria's internal affairs will be the time for the US to pursue more than a diplomatic course.

Israel, bordering on Syria and being close to Turkey, will be watching what happens with more concern than the US or western European nations. Fortunately, its PM, Mr Netanyahu, is wise enough to be alert but to take no action that might be interpreted as an intervention.
