Partition Syria (and Lebanon)

Reader comment on item: Thoughts on the Syrian Downing of a Turkish Warplane

Indeed stay out. But indirectly intervene to bring about a favorable redrawing of Syria's (and Lebanon's) new component state's borders when the inevitable dissolution of the old French protectorate and Ottoman province comes. It is highly unlikely that Sunni and Alewite communties will be able to live in peace under one Syrian roof again.

Where US and Russian interests align, (there are some grounds to assert this), we should quietly cooperate. A formula can be found so that the newly formed states borders serve the interests of both. This may be preferable, and humane, rather than allowing the situation to descend into wholesale slaughter and uncontrolled ethnic cleansing. Plus, this situation will inevitably spread to Lebanon, if it continues, anyway.

As for Turkey, well. it no longer possesses an effective officer class, most are in jail. They are more of a threat to themselves than anything else, misguided US policy notwithstanding.
