Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by Freda Flood (United States), Dec 29, 2004 at 03:00

As usual, your brilliant remarks strike right to the heart of the matter. Yes, there were some who were inconvenienced by the Japanese internment, but not as many as thousands of our innocent American soldiers and their families because of the Japanese. The survival of our country was seriously in danger of collapsing from these secret enemies who had been plotting and planning for years with the cooperation of Japanese living here, to overthrow our country. The Bataan Death March and other such similar incidents proved the Japanese savagery and cruelty against the U.S. when our soldiers were captured by them - there were no civil rights when Americans were captured. The threat had to be dealt with, and we did it as humanely as possible, which is more than what was done for our captured soldiers. Knowing full well the extent of espionage that was taking place in this country in cooperation with many Japanese lliving here, we had no choice but to deal with it in any possible and we did so as humanely as possible, considering what had been done to us. Alice in Wonderland is not a role model for swimming in dangerous waters with sharks surrounding waiting to devour us. Only by keeping our guard up in any way we know how to survive in a humane fashion, as we did previously, can we ensure our safety in the treacherous waters that now surround us once again.
