Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters
in response to reader comment: JAPANESE RELOCATION MYTH BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA

Submitted by Brendan O'Leary (United States), Mar 8, 2007 at 22:15

First off, I feel it necessary to make it clear that CAPTAIN James Olsen has no ranking in any military branch....he is merely the captain of his own boat. Secondly, I feel it necessary to apologize to the rest of the world for CAPTAIN Olsen's point of view, as it sharply contrasts with the rest of the Island's (incidentally why the curriculum remains unchanged). My mother was one of the strongest advocates for adding this to the 6th grade curriculum and proudly teaches it every year.

CAPTAIN Olsen, unfortunately for him, lives on an Island with many enlightened thinkers, people ready to embrace the wrongdoings of yesteryear to create a better future. As our own Representative Jay Inslee put it "In the true spirit of [America], we learn from our mistakes, to better our Great Nation." I love America, and all Americans. Including Japanese Americans, who, by the way, also fought in WW2 and rescued a group of Texans despite heavy losses, a real life saving private ryan story. My advice to CAPTAIN Olsen is to just move: if your inner guilt is too much to confront, then continue on the path your on, as long as it leads off of the Island. Hey! You could take your boat!
