Islam had nothing to do with World War I? Really?

Reader comment on item: Who was the Prophet Muhammad?
in response to reader comment: Wars and Religion

If I remember my history correctly, the Central Powers consisted of the Austro-Hungarian, German, and Osmanli (Ottoman Turkish) Empires. One of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI's official titles was Caliph of the Faithful, and Protector and Servant of the Holy places of Mecca, Medina, and Al-Quds (Jerusalem). Oh and was this not about the same timeline of the Armenien Genocide and Diaspora? Imagine that, after all the faithful service the renown Armenien Baylan family of architects provided to the Osmanli Dynasty by gracing Istanbul with beautiful palaces, mosques and monuments. What a payback. To be fair, that attrocity had more to do with Turkish nationalism than Islam, but I hope you can see my point.
