Now hear this!

Lieberman is canny. Like a Czarist aristocrat who realizes which side his bread is buttered on, he gives lip service to whichever direction the wind is blowing that week.

This is not a criticism actually. Public opinion in the West is formed by the media reportage. Lieberman realizes that sounding like a reasonable conciliatory man of peace he will be perceived as such. And maybe he has become one. Ariel Sharon was thought to be a stubborn warrior incapable of making concessions and he handed over Gaza!

2009 is a very different year from any other in our lifetimes. The ones who adapt to the rapidly changed new reality the quickest will survive and thrive.

As I type this I can't say if Lieberman is just trying to make the right noises or really means what he says.
At least he moves towards turning the tables around. Israel has to do something to change it's appearance as the malign aggressor.

Even if he turns out to be an iron fist in a velvet glove, he will be listened to more closely.
