thank-you for the clarification

Reader comment on item: Avigdor Lieberman's Brilliant Debut

Submitted by John W McGinley (United States), Apr 2, 2009 at 11:40

First of all I want ot thank-you for the clarification concerning Lieberman's actual speech in contrast to popular media accounts of it. He DOES indeed maintain a "2-state-solution" and according to a paradigm of achieving such which is, most likely, the ONLY way it can be achieved while maintaining Israel's integrity. You were wise to celebrate his speech even in the face of prior skepticism concerning the man.

I also remains true that the "road-map" of 2003 is going to undergo some compromise -- with Lieberman in the Government it will still remain a realistic "map" -- under pressure from the Obama Administration. And that's not necessarily bad. First of all, Israel still must consider its gains and loses through the prism of on-going American support without which the prospects would be most bleak for its continued well-being and even existence. Such is inevitable. That having been acknowledged I too celebrate Lieberman's clarity on this. I know you had your difficulties with the policies of Ariel Sharon.

But Lieberman is the first Israeli politician who, in my judgement, instantiates the spirit of that great man. May he -- I believe sooner rather than later would be fitting -- now rest in peace.
