Hitler and Mussolini WERE socialists

Reader comment on item: Fascism's Legacy: Liberalism
in response to reader comment: Hitler and Mussolini were not socialists

Submitted by Lee (Canada), Feb 26, 2009 at 18:27

Hitler and Mussolini certainly WERE socialists, as was Tito and even Polish communists. Do not mix socialism with communism (everything "communal"). Socialism may not encourage private property but never completely abolish it. Even communists had to make concessions to private property. The only truly communist communists were the Russian, Korean and Cuban ones. In all other "communist" countries private property was limited to various extent but never exterminated.

As for Hitler and Mussolini, they campaigned on slogans appealing to working class. Essentially, a more "equitable" distribution of wealth. In their rule, they followed through. Their social base was primarily workers and other underprivileged. If this is not socialism, then what is?

Regards.
