The Liberal-Fascist Connection

Reader comment on item: Fascism's Legacy: Liberalism

Submitted by Prof. Paul Eidelberg (Israel), Jan 10, 2008 at 05:49

Dr. Pipes is to be congratulated for this insightful and "politically incorrect" analysis.

Two things should be noted. First, no less than Friedrich Nietzsche said there is no greater threat to liberty thah when liberals come into power. Second, Fascism in Italy was a socialist mocement, and therefore has much in common with the statist-cum-socialist orientation of contempoary liberalis.

By the way, Nietzsche exposed the lie of socialism after revealing the truth about modern individualism. "Socialism," he wrote, "is merely a means of agitation employed by individualism: it grasps that, to attain anything, one must organize to a collective action, to a 'ower.' But what it desires is not a social order as the goal of the individual but a social order as a means of making possible many [mediocre] individuals. This is the instinct of socialists about which they frequently deceive themselves ... The preaching of altruistic morality in the service of individualism: one of the most common lies of the nineteenth century."
