Give Gaza to Egypt?Reader comment on item: Give Gaza to Egypt Submitted by Maurice (Israel), Jan 30, 2008 at 05:36 Sorry, but I'm afraid that Egypt doesn't want this place. They were very relieved in actuality when Israel took it from them in '67. During Egypt's 19 year "administration" of Gaza, from 1948 to 1967, they did little, if anything to help the people living there, and if it wern't for UN organizations life UNICEF and UNRWA, the Gazans would probably have starved to death. Despite the Egyptians letting hundreds of thousands of Gazans cross into Egypt to buy food and other supplies, the Egyptian government does want any more refugees, thank you. They have enough problem with the Sudanis. Gazans who do try to live in Egypt will eventually find out that it's not easy to make a living in a country that has one of the fastest growing populations in the world and with an average per-capita income of only around $1,000 per year. I'm sure that some people will be allowed to remain in Egypt, but most of the ones who are still there will eventually be forced to return to Gaza. Hamas leader Ismail Haneyeh should try to improve his country and stop his people from shooting their Kassam rockets into Israel. THEN, things might begin to improve in Gaza. Along with this, I'm sure many older Gazans long for the "good old days" when they were allowed to work in Israel and were thus able to feed their families. If they still use Israeli currency, why can't they find a way to co-exist with Israel? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
