I hope i'm wrong!Reader comment on item: Give Gaza to Egypt Submitted by leo solomon (Israel), Jan 30, 2008 at 04:43 In 1976 Begin offered to return Gaza to Egyptian rule. That offer was spurned by Sadat. Mubarak ,who converted the peace treaty into a defacto hudna ,is even less likely to take control of Gaza. The PLO , created by Russia and Egypt tfor the pupose of maintaining a low level war of attrition ,has been succeeded by Hamas which now fullfills the function of softening Israel up for the final confrontation for which Egypt has been preparing its citizens and its military since Mubarak took power in 1981. Taking control of Gaza would lose Egypt that function and bring into its midst an element that would further enhance the Muslim Brotherhood which already seriously threatens Mubarak's rule.
