Reader comment on item: Democrats, Republicans, and Israel

Submitted by John Manitta (United States), May 23, 2006 at 20:12

Having Israel as a friend and ally is like having a pit bull in our middle eastern back yard. He must be fed and maintained. Nixon saw this. The situation was recognized by the republican party . The party of strong military and big business. Even through the Jews have always voted democrat, the dems looked on Israel as a liability. Why, I am not sure. We lose Israel, we lose the middle east ,regardless of what we do in Iraq.

I think most Americans realize this, regardless of thier feelings toward the American Jewish community. This thin line is fostered by our Christian.Judean ties, our love for family, our old neihborhood upbrining, and our desire for peace. It would be counter productive to the spread of democratic ideas in region, if we turn our backs on this little country that is facing total destruction from an overwhelming, fanatical, barbaric, enemy of the free world.

If and when we face Iran , Israel will have our backs. I can't think of anyone except the Brits that I would trust . If it was politicly correct to have Israel in Iraq it would be over by now............JM
