British Cultural Insecurity

Reader comment on item: Weak Brits, Tough French

Submitted by Joe (United Kingdom), Jul 19, 2005 at 04:49

Hooray for the French. Britain has only had 25 years of continual domestic terrorism to learn from, it is very handy the French are at hand to guide us in the right direction. We tried internment, and that spawned a new generation of killers (or Freedom Fighters for the NORAID contingent, terrorism's great eh?) and learned from that, making plenty of mistakes along the way.

The fact is that some problems are impossible to resolve unless someone capitulates completely, as France will understand from 1940.

An interesting article, as I type 200 yards from Aldgate station, and a similar distance from one of the largest muslim areas in Europe. Having worked and lived in France, and as a Londoner born and bred, I have to say that although our version of multi-culturalism is not perfect, I would rather have that than the cultural superiority of the French, and their hyper-sensitive defence of it. The reason Britain does not feel the need to preserve its culture, is that it has spread across the world like none other. The article was written in New YORK, in the ENGLISH language. That just about tells you all you need to know.
