Reader comment on item: Weak Brits, Tough French

Submitted by Peter J. Herz (United States), Jul 12, 2005 at 22:14

While France deserves commendation on its intelligence sharing, the chief reason the UK has become the West's terrorist hub is its commitment to civil liberties and the rule of law.

In itself, the question of the hijab is unimportant. France also bans distinctive orthodox Jewish forms of dress from public schools, and if there are any Old Order Amish left in Alsace, they'd probably have a rough time, too. If the Islamic community in America decides that it is squarely against the terrorists and turns in its imams and others who preach bombing the neighbors, as well as limits its da'wa to speech and writing, I'd also stand up for the right of its women to wear the hijab.
