MacArthur, not Eisenhower

Reader comment on item: The Way to Peace

Submitted by Henry Wyatt, PhD (United States), Dec 20, 2016 at 12:26

You erred in attributing "no substitute for victory" to Eisenhower. It was Douglas MacArthur's coinage.

My own views on Israel/Palestine are more often than not at variance with yours, and my Zionism is more pallid than yours. I do agree with you about the perfidy on the Palestine side, which critics of Israel and Zionism always ignore. I would add, however, that the war between Palestinian Jews and Palestinian Arabs is an ethnic war, each claiming the moral right to possess the land in toto---not much different than those elsewhere in the region, or in the Balkans, and is equally insoluble.

Daniel Pipes replies:

So many readers have sought to correct me on the Eisenhower-MacArthur quotation matter. But I got it right.

I ascribe the quote to Eisenhower on the authority of The Yale Book of Quotations, p. 231. See the excerpt I posted at http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2009/07/victory-an-obsolete-concept#Eisenhower
