E Gibbon in his said masterpiece blames the fall on the adoptation of christianity as the state religion rather than the barbarians at the Gates.Paganism was outlawed by 400AD academies teaching the wisdom of ancient Greeks were closed, end of free thinking. In its stead we have apathy and loss of civic pride due to belief in imminent milleaniarism.

There are lessons for this in modern Europe,we must all ,including recent incomers take pride in our democratic free societies. While the mob and the vulgar may take comfort in unquestioning blind faith we must not let the so called community leaders give intellectual respectability to fanaticism and bigotry. ve.co.
