The real folly-- settlement without annexation

Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

Submitted by Kalman Neuman (Israel), Apr 14, 2005 at 00:18

The situation that Sharon is attempting to extricate Israel from is the neither-fish-nor fowl situaiton in which Israel (for many years led by Sharon himself) settles its citizens in the territories without annexing them. This has created an untenable situation where people legitimately see the place they are living as "their homes" and as a part of the State of Israel while formally this is not the case.

Israel has to make a decision on the future of the territories and the settlements: whatever will not be annexed, should be left. The idea of leaving Jewish settlers as inhabitants of a Palestinian entity is ridiculous if not worse.
