Israel's folly?

Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

These are very sobering thoughts, and I long protested Israel's taking this course without a referendum. However, when all is said and done, I think the Gaza abandonment will prove to be a step along the way toward settling the issue once and for all that the Palestinians are not and never have truly been interested in a state. What they want and will continue to want is Israel's destruction.

The danger, of course, is that we will give them the opportunity to achieve it. But I think not. They will have their opportunity to have something in the nature of a state, and they will perceive and seize that opportunity as a renewed opportunity to destroy the state of Israel, but in the end what will once again be, as Israel's great sage Abba Eban observed, is that they will not have missed the opportunity to miss an opportunity.
