Removing Gaza residents from their homes

Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

Submitted by J. Sheff (United States), Apr 13, 2005 at 22:56

In Dr. Pipes' April 5th article he states: challenge to the reader: name another democracy that has forcibly removed thousands [of] its own citizens from their lawful homes.

My answer is: the United States.
Under "eminent domain" governments have the right to remove citizens from their homes -- forcibly, if necessary, with adequate compensation, when the public good is seen to outweigh their private rights.

However, I agree with you that, should Gaza settlers wish to remain in their homes after the withdrawal of the Israeli army, they should have that option.
