Reader comment on item: Ariel Sharon's Folly

Submitted by Marci Mays (United States), Apr 5, 2005 at 16:29

Mr. Pipes,

Your condemnation of Sharon's Gaza pullout plans as folly fails to mention or to account for one extremely important difference between Oslo and now: The separation fence. This fence has shown once and for all that sealing the Palestinians out prevents violence. Far from liberal folly, Sharon's policy reflects the most conservative evolution, namely that the Palestinians are by nature incapable of peace and, like vicious animals, need to be sealed off from civilized life. He cannot say it out loud, but his insistence that all Israelies remove themselves to the civilized side of the fence betrays what is to come: Life beyond the fence will be a wasteland of the dead and dying, consumed by hatred and ignored by their Arab brothers. It is an absolutely brilliant strategy.
