Obama let off too lightly

Reader comment on item: ISIS Rampages, the Middle East Shakes

Obama is let off too lightly in these mostly correct notes. Obama walked away from the talks to establish a lasting US presence in Iraq, started by Bush before he left office, and thereby snatched defeat from the jaws of victory..

Had there been only a modest US military presence in Iraq today, this riff-raff would not have got far. Now, it seems, Iranian forces will do the job without too much difficulty, since Obama has left Maliki with no other choice. We may be on the threshold of a revived Iranian empire, stretching across ancient Babylonia and Assyria to the Mediterranean coast.

Let's see if the Iranian regime is smart enough to neutralize the Iraqi Kurds by granting them the status of a vassal state on generous terms. If so, it will be back to Cyrus, with thanks to Obama. The fantasy of the late Shah and the daydream of every Persian, fulfilled by the ayatollahs.
