Encouraging Islamic Reformation

Reader comment on item: A Neo-Conservative's Caution

Submitted by Lorenzo (United States), Mar 10, 2005 at 15:07

It seems that the most valuable thing that could be done is to make an Islamic Reformation easy for Muslims to do themselves. A comparison of various polls of populist sentiment among Muslims that I have read shows extreme polarization between those Muslims who believe that Islam is a tolerant and peaceful religion with a vibrant intellectual community, and those fundamentalist Muslims who believe that Islam is necessary, exactly as a medieval, violent and intolerant version as described in the Quran and that no interpretation done after the 10th century can be valid. The latter are the Muslims who are at war with the US and who wish to establish a universal caliphate and implement medieval style Sharia with the Jizya, Dhimmitude, slavery, oppression of women, tribalism, racism, chopping of heads and hands for crimes such as insulting their ideas, and all the rest of the poisonous mess.
