Parallel with Samuel Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations"

Reader comment on item: [The Search for Moderate Islam:] A Reply to Lawrence Auster

Submitted by Peter Chew (United States), Jan 28, 2005 at 14:41

I find myself in agreement with 90% of what I read by Dr Pipes. However, I have always been unconvinced by the argument that "moderate Islam is the solution". I note that Lawrence Auster's argument is remarkably consistent with, and the very term "civilizational" echoes, Samuel Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations": "Some Westerners, including President Bill Clinton, have argued that the West does not have problems with Islam but only with violent Islamist extremists. Fourteen hundred years of history demonstrate otherwise." (p. 209).
