I don't know why the US can't resist trying to find "peace" there

Reader comment on item: The Gods and the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Sep 26, 2007 at 14:28

I realize every US politician is caught between the Israeli and Arab lobbies, but I don't see why more of them don't try just being agnostic as to any solution to the insoluble.

Although I don't particularly like Powell, he was one US statesman who tries that approach, saying "the Israelis are our friends, but so are the Arabs" and he seemed to value avoiding the Middle East peace chimera.

I think Islam and those motivated by it are the greatest threat global human freedom has ever faced, but -- beyond passively and quietly supporting Israel's security and encourage the Saudi demons to support their dog in this fight -- I would leave the issue alone.
