Reader comment on item: Columbia [University] vs. America

Submitted by Arnie Kramer (United States), Apr 1, 2003 at 15:41

Dear Dr. Pipes:

Firstly, thank you for your clear voice of reason and your confrontation of the destructive forces within our world.

Your article quotes Professor De Genova's statements and the distancing response of Columbia University -- that he "does not represent" the university's views. In light of the number of professors hired by Columbia University sharing similar anti-American and anti-Israeli viewpoints, do you think it would be a good thing for Columbia to state exactly what its viewpoint is on these matters?

Thanks, again. I wish you strength and wisdom to continue your tasks.

Yours,
Arnie Kramer

Daniel Pipes replies:

Columbia's president has distanced himself from De Genova. But NBC's president fired Peter Arnett for a much milder offense.
Why not do the same here?

No, I don't think Columbia University should take a stance on the war in Iraq; but it should have standards of decency and patriotism enough so that it would fire De Genova.
