Overall, your comment is understandable, but there are 2 points i think you missed.

The first is in your own post: loyalty to the cleric and NOT the religion cannot then be construed as the ideal of "islamic law"...

Second, it is obvious that just because a cleric opines about the fate of someone that this fate will be carried out - the Afghan/apostasy case is clearly an example of such, and last I looked Rushdie was alive and well...

It does us all better, critics and supporters alike, to maintain some posture of critical thought -especially when being critical :)
