Actually for there is no deity but God, it was a misunderstanding, but the actually meaning in Islam is there is no God but allah. Allah is our way of saying God. It truly means that there is only one God and he is allah. Islamic Martyrs in the past would say la illaha illallah when polythiests would force them to convert to their religion, but many of them refused because of their personal beliefs in allah and his religion, Islam.
