drop in the ocean

Reader comment on item: Is Allah God?
in response to reader comment: Our dear Arthur and was Muhammad really uneducated?

Credibility on the line? Because I am willing to share a little info about myself? First, I didn't convert to Islam because I thought my conversion would magically make things better for my friends or community. I am not a fool. I never gave this information as an argument, I gave it to give my views context - something you have yet to do.

Secondly, by saying that I studied border culture I was trying to clear up your misunderstanding of me. Again I was giving my views context and simply introducing myself. There is no need to be defensive. Me introducing myself or sharing my personal history is not meant as an argument.

I don't think that hurts my credibility. You have yet to establish any credibility yourself. Furthermore your ability to read Arabic does not mean that you have a significantly deeper understanding of the Qu'ran. Modern Arabic differs from classical Arabic.. which is what the Prophet spoke. You claim to understand both now? How long have you even studied Islam and from whom? Did you practice it before?

Your analysis of the Qu'ran is a literal one. It treats the words rigidly, but like all poetry one should be flexible in interpretation. Ever heard of a parable? An allegory? A metaphor? Ever heard of human error? A typo? Muhammad educated or not? Moot point.

1/5th of the world's population is Muslim. Islam is the world's second largest religion and fastest growing, and many Muslims take their belief very seriously. It would probably be better to try to be a positive influence through respect and tolerance instead of demonizing other people's faiths. Your argument and my response are anonymous. They don't matter, they have as little effect as a drop in the ocean.
