Peter, you are on to something here. The well document cases of islamist attackers in the West fall into an age group of quite young males. That age group, all the way into their late 20ies, mirrors the age group of the majority of active ordinary criminals.

In other words, islamism, similar to criminality, appears as a phase in male muslims lives. I see another mirror image. Both groups demonstrate a striking lack of compassion for their victims.

The main difference however is this. Active criminals receive little support from wider society. Active islamists enjoy wide tolerance, even loyalty, within muslim society. I do recall the reports how dozens of so-called-youths attacked the police after the arrest of that one terrorist in Brussels-Molenbeeck (the Paris attacks). How many more aided in his safe sheltering - who knows.
