Robert, I am afraid you are wrong there were no islamic fighters bothering the West in 1791. I first came across this story in Saint Tropez 20 years ago. Before the days of a topless Brigitte Bardot came quite some years of Burqa-esque era. The Cote d'Azur finally resisted muslim pirates and occupation.
Search and find the sections about "pirates" or "Barbary Pirates".

The young United States sailed these waters at the time. So did the British earlier. With the beginning of the 19th century the US actually did fight a war against those pirates who quoted Mohammad to justify enslaving Westerners. In those days the US simply won the war.
