Which Way Depends on What Reference Point

Reader comment on item: Which Way Will Abbas Go?

Submitted by Jacob Slabiak (United States), Jan 11, 2005 at 13:27

Abbas is not a mystery man; he is a shrewd politician who knows how to package himself to the media, especially the west. As Pipes stated, Abbas will apply what is needed at the moment to achieve his ultimate goal, as Arafat had hoped. But, unlike Arafat, he will wear the western suit and be clean shaven, showing his moderate image to the world. In this regard, he comes across as a more palatable figure to the west than Arafat. Also, unlike Arafat, Abbas' uncovered head with "white hair" shows him as a man of wisdom. Seems Abbas knows public relations well.
