Abbas Has No Mandate to Do Anything

Reader comment on item: Which Way Will Abbas Go?

Submitted by Philip Zwick (United States), Jan 11, 2005 at 13:36

My math says that Abbas received support from only about 20% of eligible voters. This is hardly a mandate to do anything. It will be interesting to see if the mainstream media will emphasize this point. I will not hold my breath, as I expect the 60+% figure he won will be used to pressure Israel for "concessions", rather than the realistic 20% figure which says Israel should do nothing.
