Optimism?

Reader comment on item: Islamist Turkey Overreaches

Submitted by Edward Halper (United States), Jun 8, 2010 at 22:30

It's hard to optimistic about Turkey. Erdoğan crushed what looked to be an attempted military coup last February. That may have been its last chance for democracy. Now that he no longer faces the military, Erdoğan has come out of the closet as an Islamist. The flotilla was a show that seemed to have dramatically increased his support in Turkey. His next show may some expansionist move or heightened repression of the Kurds.

His move against Israel brought him support in the west from so-called "leftists" who will now be happy to ignore the descent into tyrannic Islamism.
