Yes, the Church did say that Islam (if you combine sufi, shia, sunni) has more people than Catholics do. Individually, however, Sunni Islam and Catholcism have similar adherents.

Now, the growth of Islam is due mostly to high birth rates in countries where if you are not Muslim, you are riduculed if not killed. Also, many of the looser Protestant churches have been losing people to atheism/agnosticism, which by some counts IS the world's largest religion.

What the media doesn't report on is that areas without sharia law in what Muslims call the land of mohammed are experiencing massive growth in Christianity. Even Saudi Arabia has 1-2 million Christians. Nigeria, once a wholly Muslim and pagan country, will be 70% Christian as the next decade closes.
