Dictatorship: a reflection of Arab societyReader comment on item: [Saddam's] WMD Lies Submitted by Mori Krantz MD (United States), Oct 7, 2003 at 13:56 Dr. Pipes' article raises important points about the mindset of dictators, and suggests that attendant pride and ignorance led to Hussein's downfall. However, the article does not make a critical link between aspects of Arab society and this form of government. In societies where tribal connections, male honor, and power are valued more than freedom it is not surprising that ruthless dictatorships emerge. With few exceptions, dictatorship is the principal form of government in the Arab world. In order for this part of the world to modernize it is essential that tolerance and liberty become valued societal principles. Our presence and rebuilding efforts in Iraq offers such hope.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
