Morris:

Yes, the leaders you mention are courageous and focused. Sadly, there isn't that large a group of politicians who have the same focus. And yes, Pipes and others are the visionaries of our lifetime.

My car was being serviced at a car dealership and as I waited in the waiting room, a TV blared some awful program. When everyone left the room I put on C-Span and found Sarkosy's inauguration. It was so very moving. The new President took his oath at a historical site involving fallen French heroes. It was emotional. It was poignant. It was about freedom and about the French loving themselves again. People on the street wanted to touch him. I understood them. Not a French bone in my body. But at that moment, I was French.

People came into the waiting room and there I was -- in my own little world. I don't mean to sound snobby. I really dislike snobs. What I'm saying is that there are those of us who are intensely moved by freedom, there are those who may be, but aren't as intense about it, and there are those who hate it and hate America.

I'm happy there are others out there who are intense about it. It's worthy of intensity. And I'm especially happy that the visionaries provide an outlet for us. I will say that I haven't been feeling very optimistic as of late. However, yesterday, Memorial Day, as it happens every year I go to a parade, seeing what's left of the World War II vets, Korean War vets, Vietnam War vets, and all the others -- to those fighting the war on terror, I am absolutely sure we will prevail. I have a shot of a license plate with the head of bin Laden being eaten by a eagle, with words that escape me now, but if I remember them I'll post them along with other photos of the event that I took of the Danbury, Connecticut Memorial Day parade at http://reportingobjectively.blogspot.com/

By the way, the license place with bin Laden's head had a Portugese American flag on it as well. Middle America -- the salt of the earth.

So, you're right. We cannot get down. There's a big job ahead of us. Thanks for the pep talk.
