Nice to see muslims, christians and jews having a civilized dialogue without name calling and insulting. I have very good muslim & jewish friends so getting along despite religious differences is no stranger to me.

However, having said that it shocks me to hear you characterized Mohammed as a guy who "walked the middle of the way".

Mohammed ordered the killing of more than three thousands unarmed, defenseless jews in the Qurayza (hope spelling is right) after they have surrendered. You sound as a very reasonable person, if this is your opinion of a moderate person then Bin Laden must look to you as a ............oh well, let's keep it civil.

You also seem to suggest that Mohammed was more adhered to the law than Jesus, when in fact he couldn't even comply with his own laws. After having stablished that every man could have up to 4 women he (Mohammed) conveniently received a verse from Allah stating he was exempt from that limit .

You state that; "A faithful reading of scriptures does not permit violence towards women."

A faithful reading, what is that?, going through the text in a way that will make sure I'll reach a self serving predetermined conclusion?

This is where musleem like to have the cake and eat it too; if tomorrow some scientist discover the tremendous health benefit of drinking alcohol surely shortly after islam followers will start talking about how the prohibition in the Koran (or surah) for drinking alcohol doesn't really mean that but rather we have to read "within the context" and how a "faithful reading" will reveal the intentions of Allah that we "Booze our way to a healthier and happier life.

We can also bet the house that if someday someone discovers the "benefits" of beating your wife, every muslim will point out the fact that the Koran encourages a good fits beating of women while the Bible doesn't .

You wrote that "I do not consider hijab as compulsory",

It doesn't help that you are not the maximum authority in islam, just look at how many countries the hijab is not only mandatory but women get a good and healthy beating for violating that cruelty. Have you ever seen the video of a muslim women eating spaguetti in a restaurant with the hijab? Google search it and you'll have a good laugh (can't help it)

You said :"If we see it as a protection of women from the hostile and imperialistic male gaze" - "My wife certainly feels more protected from men by wearing it". - "How liberating is the social pressure many "western" women and even children now feel to constantly seem sexually appealing to any man who happens to see them,"

Wow, there's an intellectual when you need one, what is next? a letany of reasons why cutting the hand of a thief -as indicated by islamic laws- is beneficial for his self steem, and how that will empower him to be a better and more productive man?

Hope you are still around and able to answer my post.
