al-Mufasereen had no clue However if you read al-Tabari He says that the word Allah is a contraction of the word al-Ilah or the God However this is not true for many reasons but I will spare you the details for now

Many Muslims including Sheikh al-Azhar realize that the word Allah is really a loan word from Syriac Alaha/Allaha where the definite article is Syriac is the a at the end of the word and therefore the Arabic word Allah must mean The God not God
