"but radical Islam, a totalitarian idleology that did not even exist in 1796."

What date was it again that the Ottoman Turks for the last time stood before Vienna? I looked it up in Oriana Fallaci "The force of Reason". (1683, page 50 in my copy) Anyway, an aggressive and totalitarian expansion of a thousand years, first by the Arabs then by the Ottomans, stopped because of Western expansion and islamic lack of development. We call that expansion "colonialism" and it was triggered by economic and technological innovation: the industrial revolution and its forerunning phases. Western colonialism was something more than hordes of hormon-driven youngsters looking for paradise and creating hell wherever they went. Moreover: the fact that bloody totalitarian expansion of islam stopped, did not mean domestic cruelty, oppression and racism against women stopped. Domestically, islam was always totalitarian, everywhere. After the 17th century islam lacked the power to go abroad.
