You said "For me the old testament was allegorical in nature."

Well here is the good news for you from the Quran:

(3:7) Allah has sent down this Book to you, (O Prophet!) which includes verses of two kinds. The first consists of those verses which have definite meaning (mohkamat) and constitute the foundation of Allah's Laws. The second kind is allegorical (mutashabihat). But those in whose hearts is perversity, they follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead and seeking to give it their own interpretation."

Interesting! So which one did Mohammed follow? mutashabihat or mohkamat?

Another question then. Here is a list of some of the prophets recognised by muslims.

Noah
Abraham
Isaac
Jacob
Moses
John the Baptist
Jesus
Muhammad

Of all of them listed here and I concede there are many more, how may resorted to military campaigns to spread their word and take land by force. Only one as far as I can see, your most revered prophet in Islam. I can't even imagine Jesus picking up a sword can you? So Islam is based on a the words from a man who waged war for ten years of his life. That trend seems to have remained as Islam wages war on the rest of the non-muslim world.
